The Aberystwyth University of Wales, often known as Prifysgol Aberystwyth, is an institution of higher learning. University came into existence in 1872 as University College Wales, Aberystwyth, and was later renamed University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1894 after becoming a founding member of the University of Wales. AU once more changed its name in the middle of the 1990s to become the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. On September 1, 2007, Wales regained its independence and lost its federal status.
