The University of Bolton, recently renamed the University of Greater Manchester, has a proud heritage stretching back to 1824, when it began as the Bolton Mechanics’ Institute. Over two centuries, it transformed through various phases including the Bolton Institute of Higher Education before officially achieving university status in 2004/05.  With around 11,000 students, the University of Bolton combines a friendly, compact campus with the advantage of being close to Manchester and Liverpool. Small class sizes ensure a personal learning experience where students are known by name, not number. Bolton’s teaching quality has consistently earned top government ratings, supported by 192 academic staff, of whom 67.7% hold PhDs. In the 2025 edition, the university’s overall ranking slipped by 13 places to 119th nationally and to 11th in the North West just above the University of Cumbria regionally.
