Merit-Based Scholarships
Regardless of their socioeconomic circumstances, all students are immediately eligible for merit-based scholarships at the University of Chicago. No more application is needed. Exemplary students are chosen for university merit scholarships based on their exceptional leadership, extracurricular accomplishments, academic success, and community service.
Policy for Merit Scholarships
As long as the student continues to be enrolled full-time and maintains good standing with the College, UChicago merit scholarships are guaranteed for four years. If you receive more than one scholarship from the University of Chicago, the most current grant will take precedence over any earlier merit scholarships you may have received from the university.
Prior to being accepted to UChicago, admitted students who received a Summer Session merit scholarship would have this scholarship listed as “University Scholarship” on their financial aid award notification. The total amount may exceed the amount specified in your initial admission letter for the Summer Session as part of their “University Scholarship” award. Any “University Scholarship” includes your grant for the summer session. Merit scholarships for the Summer Session will not be awarded to students in addition to the “University Scholarship. Students who were chosen to earn the merit scholarship for the Summer Session will have received notification of their selection in their Summer Session admission letter. To be eligible for the scholarship upon admission to the undergraduate college, students must have received written notification of their selection at the time of acceptance for the Summer Session. Even when they qualify for merit scholarships and other types of financial help, students who are chosen for any of the Summer Scholarship Programs do not automatically get the Summer Session merit scholarship.
The following scholarship programs, which often include some form of additional support elements, are generously offered by UChicago:
University Merit Scholarships
The most exceptional students receive merit scholarships based on their leadership, extracurricular achievements, academic excellence, and community service.
Without taking financial need into account, the committee decides merit prizes based on the application for admission. Merit prizes start at $2,000 and vary in size. Scholarships might be given for summer activities or for four years of undergraduate studies. Since the majority of UChicago’s financial aid is given out based on need, all students who might need financial assistance for their study are urged to apply.
There is no need to submit a supplemental application for a merit award; all first-year students are immediately considered for all available merit scholarships. Merit-based scholarships are not available to transfer students. Through the end of April, scholarship recipients will be notified of their prizes on a rolling basis. Please be aware that notification is only sent to scholarship winners.
Phoenix Scholarship First
The First Phoenix Scholarship program would ensure free tuition for all first-generation college students who are eligible for need-based financial aid. If they are not eligible for need-based financial aid, first-generation students will get a $20,000 stipend spread over four years. Students whose parents did not graduate from a four-year university or College are eligible to receive awards. Qualified applicants will be taken into consideration immediately and won’t need to submit anything more than their admissions application.
First Phoenix College Student Internship
The University of Chicago is dedicated to giving you an education that advances both your career and personal growth. Therefore, following their first year at the College, all first-generation college students are eligible to earn a subsidized summer Metcalf internship or research opportunity. You must meet with your career adviser and take part in Career Advancement programs in order to be eligible for the chance. To make sure you’re in an excellent position to locate an internship that suits your interests and objectives, you will meet with your adviser at several points during the year to talk about your academic and professional ambitions.
National Police and Fire Scholarship
The University of Chicago is pleased to launch our Police and Fire Scholarship program in recognition of our country’s public safety officers. Up to full-tuition, four-year scholarships are available to confident children of professional, active-duty, injured or murdered on-duty, or required-to-be-retired municipal, county, and state police and firefighters. High school seniors who meet the requirements for admission to the University of Chicago and who are the children (including legally adopted children) of active, sworn, professional municipal, county, or state police officers or firefighters are eligible to apply for this competitive award. Experienced police officers with state, county, or municipal police forces, sheriff’s office officers, and professional firefighters with county or municipal fire departments are examples of qualified parent positions. Eligible students include those who must retire and those whose parents were murdered or wounded while serving.
