OCAD University is a public art institution in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Its full name is Ontario College of Art & Design University, sometimes called OCAD. Also, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in Canada specializing in art and design and came into being in 1876. The Ontario Society of Artists began the university in Toronto in 1876. Its previous name was the Ontario School of Art. It officially starts as the Ontario College of Art in 1912, making it the first institution in Canada to focus solely on training professional artists in both fine and applied arts. The Ontario College of Art and Design became the official name in 1996 to reflect the expansion of design programs.
