After joining the University of Wales in 2004 and going by the name North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI), University received full university status in 2008. Owain Glyndwr, a medieval Welsh ruler, by having the institution bear his name. He offers in the early 15th century that universities establish all over Wales.
