La Trobe Flexible Research Scholarship (FLEX) – candidates with disabilities

La Trobe University offers the Flexible Research Scholarship to qualified applicants with disabilities who currently hold a stipend from the Research Training Program (RTP) or the La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS) to maximise opportunities for students with disabilities to pursue higher degrees through research. This award offers customised support for each recipient, an extended time frame for completing a graduate research degree and receiving a stipend, longer leave durations, and access to extra money for disability-related research expenses.

Graduate researchers who are awarded a stipend through the Research Training Program (RTP), the La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS), or who have accepted an offer for one of these programs are eligible to apply at any time of year.

Benefits of the scholarship

  1. An annual research assistance stipend of up to $3,000 for costs connected to disability-related research, such as those for Auslan interpreters or personal attendant care during conferences.
  2. Doctorate candidates may prolong their candidature for up to an extra 12 months (FTE), or Masters candidates may extend their candidature for up to 6 months (FTE) by conducting research (subject to visa criteria and permissions for overseas candidates).
  3. A scholarship for tuition fees to cover the extended candidacy term mentioned above.
  4. RTP or LTGRS stipend extended by research applicants for up to eight months (FTE) for Masters candidates and eight months (FTE) for doctorate candidates.
  5. A cumulative leave of absence of up to 24 months (subject to visa requirements and permissions for international candidates).

In order to be eligible to apply for this award, applicants must:

  1. Hold a stipend from the Research Training Program (RTP) or the La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS), or you have accepted an offer of either program; additionally.
  2. You must have a disability that can be attributed to one or more impairments related to a psychiatric condition, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairments.

(a) The impairment or impairments are permanent or are expected to be so; and

(b) The impairment or impairments significantly hinder one’s ability to perform one or more of the following tasks or one’s ability to engage in psychosocial functioning in doing so:

  • communication
  • social interaction
  • learning
  • mobility
  • self-care
  • self-management

 Those above may be proved by supplying medical records or proof that the applicant is an NDIS participant.

3. The candidate’s impairment affects how quickly they can learn, necessitating longer completion times than the requirements for regular candidature.

When choosing the successful candidates, we give preference to those whose applications come from:

  1. For doctoral research scholarships, the applicant must conduct their research on a La Trobe University campus.
  2. For master’s research scholarships, applicants must have completed a master’s degree through research or another significant body of work, such as leading authorship of a research thesis or peer-reviewed publication.
  3. For master’s by research scholarships, applicants must have received an assessment at La Trobe of 70 or above or obtain the equivalent of a high honours 2A grade degree from an Australian university.

Please be aware that too be eligible for the FLEX scholarship the candidate must either receive an RTP or LTGRS stipend at the time of application or successfully apply for one of the stipend.
