International Scholarships

Algoma University offers scholarships to help with the expense of tuition. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of your most current academic record and academic merit.

Entrance Scholarships

Criteria for Entrance Scholarships:

  1. According to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada, international students who are eligible for the following awards must be enrolled in the class on the first day of classes and hold a temporary resident visa.
  2. All students who are required to pay the international differential fee, including those transferring from college or university, those pursuing a second degree, and those who have earned a college diploma, are eligible for the Entrance Scholarship.
  1. Before starting classes at Algoma University Canada, students must fulfil all of their prerequisites during the academic year.
  2. International scholarships cannot be postponed. The students must accept the terms and conditions of admission and the scholarship granted for the year the offer was made.
  3. Students enrolling in the Winter or Spring term will be eligible for awards in the next academic year, since grants require enrolment over two semesters within an academic year (Fall/Winter).
  4. Only undergraduate degree programs are eligible for entrance scholarships.
  5. Students must receive an unconditional admissions offer before July 8, 2024, to be eligible for entrance scholarships for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Since they already qualify for a sizable tuition discount, American citizens are not eligible for these scholarships.

Award from the Chancellor: $5,000 Renewable

The Chancellor’s Award is a $5,000 scholarship awarded each academic year to international secondary school graduates starting their first year of undergraduate studies at Algoma University. Candidates must be enrolled full-time (15 credits per term throughout the autumn and winter) to be eligible.

A student’s prior academic record must have an A+ average (or its national equivalent).

To be eligible for this award, applicants must meet the following language requirements at admission

  • Duolingo Test of English (DTE): 125; Cambridge Assessment of English: 185 Overall
  • IELTS score: 7.0 overall, with no band below 6.
  • Pearson Academic English Test score: 65 TOEFL score: 560 (85 online)
  • In order to be admitted to an Ontario secondary school, international students who complete the OSSD requirements must receive 90–100 percent in their top six grade 12 U/M courses.

Candidates must maintain an average of 80 percent each year on previous fall/winter courses without failing; students must enrol in and maintain 12 credits per term during the Fall/Winter academic year; if the student fails to meet the requirements in any one year, the scholarship will not be awarded and the student will no longer be eligible for renewal in any subsequent years; recipients of the international scholarship who transition to permanent residency will still be considered for scholarship.

Continuing Scholarships

The Awards Application, which is released in March, also offers awards to international students who are enrolling or continuing their studies. Students can visit the Student Portal to learn more about this program. Please be aware that only degree-bound students are eligible for these scholarships. Graduate certificate program participants are not eligible.

Scholarship for International Baccalaureate

To be eligible for an unconditional admission scholarship, International Baccalaureate students must present valid transcripts and documentation of their IB diploma.

Scholarship Points Awarded: Tier 34+ $5,000 (Chancellor’s – Renewable)

31–33 points $2500 (Non-Renewable President’s)

(Dean’s – Non-Renewable) $1000, 28-30 points
