Types of MEXT Scholarships

MEXT has many scholarship types to cater to different student groups.

  1. Scholarships recommended by universities: offered by universities in Japan. The universities choose candidates based on interviews, recommendations, and academic standing.
  1. Scholarships recommended by the embassies: Candidates who apply through Japanese consulates or embassies abroad are eligible for scholarships recommended by the embassies. Required documents

Before the deadline, the following documents (in the specified order) must be submitted:

  • Application Form with Mark Sheet (1 original)
  • Plan of Research
  • Certified copy of transcripts from the previous universities attended, together with the degree (hope certificate).​ 

If chosen, attestation by the relevant university is required.

Applicants need to send in the following paperwork based on their educational background

  1. Application materials for applicants who have already completed their undergraduate degree at a university.
  2. Application materials for applicants who have already finished their graduate program at a university.
  3. Application materials for applicants who are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree, an academic transcript covering the period from the year of enrolment to the term for which grades have been determined at the time of application for the scholarship.
  4. For candidates seeking graduate degrees, an academic record from their undergraduate studies as well as an educational record from their graduate program covering the period from the year of enrolment to the term for which grades were announced at the time of scholarship application.
  5. A certified copy of your degree or confirmation of graduation from the university you attended. One copy with the original certification.

Applicants need to send in the following paperwork based on their educational background

  1. Certificates of graduation from the undergraduate program at the university are required for degree.
  2. Certificates of prospective graduation from the undergraduate program are required for:

  9. Suggestion a letter from the academic advisor, president, or dean of the university you have attended or are now attending. One original.
  10. These abstracts (if applicable) include one original.
  11. Letter of recommendation from the current employer, if any. One original.
