Melbourne International Engagement Awards (MIEA)
University students who wish to pursue a PhD at the University of Melbourne’s School of Mathematics and Statistics can apply for the Melbourne International Engagement Awards. For up to 3.5 years, these distinguished scholarships offer complete fee remissions (about AUD$35,000 in 2016) and yearly living stipends equal to the Australian Postgraduate Award rate (about AUD$26,288 in 2016). In addition, MIEAs offer up to AUD$3,000 in relocation assistance and single-coverage health insurance.
In order to qualify for the MIEA scholarship, the beneficiary needs to
1. be a fourth-year undergraduate student at Peking University’s School of Mathematical Sciences with an exceptional academic record or be studying in or have finished a master’s program.
2. have not finished their PhD.
3. will start their PhD at the university at the time the grant is given.
4. Applicant’s selection depends on their academic standing.

Eligibility
To qualify for this scholarship, you have to:
1. applied for and accepted into the University of Melbourne’s graduate research program.
2. are currently studying in the program.
Selection criteria
- 1. A Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) will be available to all domestic students who are accepted into the University of Melbourne’s master’s by research or doctorate program (PhD).
- 2. Depending on academic excellence, graduate research scholarships are available to both local and foreign students. These scholarships include a stipend and fee offset.
China Scholarship Council
University of Melbourne PhD Scholarship
This scholarship is available to nationals of the People’s Republic of China who want to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of Melbourne. It is available by the China Scholarship Council and the University of Melbourne to foster international collaboration.

The University of Melbourne will provide:
- a four-year PhD fellowship with full tuition fees
- 2. a four-year maximum additional living allowance of approximately $14,200 per year (2024 full-time pro-rata rate).
- 3. Supported by the China Scholarship Council (CSC):
- 4. A living stipend of about $22,800 annually (2024 rates), which includes international student health insurance
- 5. The cheapest return ticket possible from China to Melbourne
- 6. Application fees for visas.
Eligibility
- You need to be a citizen of the People’s Republic of China to be eligible for this award.
- have been granted admission to the University of Melbourne’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program. This calls for the completion of a minimum four-year undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne, with a major research component, and the equivalent of a minimum overall average grade of H2A (or 75%). Also, students must meet the English language standard.
