University Postgraduate Award (UPA)

University Postgraduate Awards (UPAs) are a stipend to cover some living expenses.

The UPA is exclusive to University of Wollongong students pursuing doctorates and master’s degrees in philosophy. The University of Wollongong allocates a set number of UPAs (University Postgraduate Awards) annually depending on merit.

DurationThree and a half (3.5) years full-time for Doctoral candidates and two (2) years for Master of Philosophy. 
Application process Please follow the instructions when you apply to UOW for your degree to apply for a UPA. Apply online. After applying, successful students might anticipate starting their UPA in the autumn session.
Eligibility requirements Students commencing Doctoral degrees and Master of Philosophy.

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship

Scholarship details

Total Amount 30% off the tuition for a course that meets the basic requirements.
Commencement 2024 
Enrolment requirement Master’s degree (coursework) at UOW (exclusively for Australian campuses) *Without – Clinical Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, and Dietetics, Master of Psychology (Clinical), Teaching, Social Work (Qualifying), or Doctor of Medicine
Citizenship requirements International student 
Application type No application is required. Students will be given this scholarship automatically.
Number of scholarships available Unlimited 

Eligibility

  1. In 2024,  start a new Master’s program at UOW (only on Australian campuses), except for degrees in teaching, social work, psychology, nutrition and dietetics, exercise physiology, and medicine.
  2. Possess outstanding academic standing (75+ WAM or equivalent).
  3. Having foreign student status
  4. not be eligible for any further funding, sponsorship, bursary, or savings
  5. Obtain a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 50 at each enrollment session.
  6. Offers for the Graduate Certificate plus Master package are not qualified for the award.

Joint Postgraduate Scholarships Program

International Postgraduate Tuition Awards (IPTAs) are available to cover international HDR students’ tuition fees in certain circumstances.

IPTAs will be available under the following three conditions:

  1. Full Course IPTA
  2. Final Session IPTA
  3. Financial Hardship IPTA

Full Course IPTA

In addition, a Full Course IPTA will be available to international students who receive stipend scholarships (equal to the current UPA stipend value) to cover their tuition up to 4.0 EFTSL for doctoral degrees and 2.0 EFTSL for master’s degrees.

Final Session IPTA

Available to overseas students looking to finish their thesis with a final session IPTA. International students classified as working overtime in their studies and have an EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load) of >4.0 for doctoral degrees and >2.0 for Master of Philosophy degrees are also eligible for a Final Session IPTA. Regarding a final session of IPTA, students should speak with their supervisor and present proof that they are almost done with their thesis. If the supervisor concurs with the claim, s/he must apply to the Graduate Research School by the deadline for that particular session.

Financial Hardship IPTA

International students who need an IPTA for a single session due to financial difficulties can apply for this. To file an IPTA for economic hardship, students should speak with their supervisor and submit complete information about their financial situation that prevents them from paying fees. If the supervisor concurs with the claim, s/he must apply to the Graduate Research School by the deadline for that particular session.
