James Cook Institution (JCU) is a public institution in North Queensland, Australia. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024, JCU is among the top 2% of universities worldwide for the total number of higher education providers listed in the International Association of Universities (IAU) database.

JCU offers a range of financially aidable scholarships. The page dedicated to scholarships, bursaries, and grants has the entire list of available scholarships. International Excellence Scholarship

JCU International Excellence Scholarship recipients who maintain a solid GPA each semester will receive a 25% tuition price discount for the duration of their approved full-degree study programs.

Eligibility

The International Excellence Scholarship is open to high achievers from the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Ghana, Europe, Asia, Papua New Guinea, and the Middle East.

International students transferring from joint programs, study abroad and exchange students, Australia Awards students, SACM students, and students receiving any other government scholarships/sponsorships that provide full tuition are not eligible.

Applicants must:

  1. Be an international student starting their studies at JCU for the first time, starting as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, and not planning to enrol in diploma programs, End-on Honours degrees, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Online and Non-Award Programs
  2. If you are starting an undergraduate degree and have an ATAR of 65 (or above), you are not eligible for this award and should apply for the JCU Partners scholarship instead.
  3. A student must demonstrate achievement of 65% or above while starting a postgraduate degree, while a passing grade for a related certificate is 50%.

How to apply?

The JCU admissions procedure automatically determines a candidate’s eligibility for scholarships. This scholarship does not require an application. A concurrent offer for the International Merit Stipend and their program of study will be made to qualified candidates.

Candidates will receive information about the scholarship rules at the time of offer.

International Merit Stipend

As long as a solid GPA is maintained, the JCU International Merit Stipend offers fortnightly payments of AUD 400 to help with living expenses while a student at JCU.

The admissions procedure automatically determines a candidate’s eligibility for scholarships. A concurrent offer for the International Merit Stipend and their program of study will be made to qualified candidates.

Exceptionally for students from Nigeria and Ghana who should apply for the International Excellence Scholarship instead, the International Merit Stipend is available to qualified, high-achieving students from Africa.

  1. Be an international student starting their studies at JCU for the first time.
  2. Starting as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student.
  3. Not planning to enrol in diploma programs, end-on honours degrees, graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, a Bachelor of Medicine, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Surgery, or online and non-award programs.
  4. If you’re starting an undergraduate degree and won’t enrol through a JCU collaboration, you can apply for the JCU Partners scholarship instead.
  5. Please provide an ATAR of 65 (or the equivalent). If you’re pursuing a postgraduate degree, you must show achievement of 65% or more, with 50% as the passing score for the student’s pertinent qualification.

International On-Campus Accommodation Grant

International full-degree students residing and attending classes at JCU’s Cairns Nguma-bada campus are the target audience for this award.

The recipients will have a solid desire to spearhead JCU on-campus events and an interest in doing so.

Eligibility

The following candidates can apply for the International On-Campus Accommodation Grant:

  1. An international student enrolled full-time (minimum nine credit points) in an undergraduate or graduate program starting in 2024.
  2. Have applied for or been offered to live at the Cairns, Nguma-bada campus of John Grey Hall Accommodations.

What to receive?

Following the census date of Study Period 1, 2025, you will receive $3,700 as a one-time payment if your grant application is approved. Kindly make the payment for up to six weeks following the census date.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be assessed on the following critical selection criteria:

  1. Engagement in social/athletic clubs, forums, contests, artistic, cultural, or religious events, among other activities (30%).
  2. Experience in organisations (15%).
  3. Ability and experience in leadership (15%).
  4. Suggested contributions to JCU’s campus and living arrangements (40%).
