Simon Fraser University maintains an engaging research environment for PhD students through its multidisciplinary focus. A sole university-wide entrance scholarship fund exists for PhD programs, but the institution needs to enhance its funding possibilities.
President’s PhD Scholarship
AWARD VALUE: $7,000
This award goes to PhD students who have made excellent progress in their degree and completed all university and program requirements. The student holds or precedes the 12th term. Not all programs use this award.
Eligibility
- PhD students who did not complete a master’s degree before starting their PhD program within the first 12 terms could not have held the award.
- All program and university requirements for the degree, including courses and qualifying exams, must have been fulfilled by eligible students, except the thesis and, for those enrolled in the clinical psychology program, the internship.
- Be in a good or adequate standing.
Criteria for selection
Graduate Studies allow academic units to impose additional eligibility and assessment requirements for their programs, providing approval is granted and the students are informed of such requirements through publication.
- The degree to which the pupil has advanced admirably.
- Proven success in the classroom.
- Leadership and scholarly output.
Application and adjudication
They do not need to apply. Each nomination requires a reference statement from the student’s supervisor that presents an overview of their development, academic accomplishments, research creation, and leadership abilities.
Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian Doctoral Fellowship in Child Health (PhD entrance fellowship)
Application deadline: January 15
Value: $25,000/year for two years
Qualifications for eligibility:
- Demonstrated excellence in the classroom at the undergraduate (and graduate, if applicable) levels.
- Please complete the PhD admissions application and submit it to SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
- Suggested PhD studies that will advance the field of child health policy, practice, or research.
- Not currently receiving a doctorate fellowship from SFU or another institution.
How to apply?
Students need to identify suitable candidates for the Child Health Doctoral Fellowship. Candidates applying for the fellowship should submit their application through email with PDF attachments by January 15.
Unique Graduate Entrance Scholarship (SGES)
The admissions committee allocates SGES awards using internal nomination methods. Its value ranges from $1,000 to $10,000. Students must apply to the Faculty of Health Sciences for MSc or PhD admission before they will be considered. When a student gets nominated, the Faculty adds SGES to its funding commitment document.
