Bilkent University is a private non-profitable research institution in Ankara, Turkey. It is also written as Bilkent Üniversitesi in Turkish. In 1984, it began with the goal of building an institution of excellence in academia and research by İhsan Doğramacı, the first president of The Council of Higher Education and the head of the famous Doğramacı family. The institution, modeled after Harvard University, was Turkey’s primary not-for-profit educational institution. The word Bilkent is an abbreviation for bilim kenti, which means “city of science” in Turkish. English is the medium of instruction at Bilkent. There are 760 academic members, with international faculty members from 34 countries accounting for one-fourth of the total. In addition, there is an increasing number of full-time international and exchange students from 67 countries.
