Nipissing University Research Fellowship (NURF)

The Nipissing University Graduate Scholarships (NUGS) support full-time graduate students.

The School of Graduate Studies funds a restricted number of NUGS each year. NUGS supports students who conduct research that advances their course of study and typically culminates in a thesis or significant research paper.

A student can use a NUGS as their sole source of support or to supplement funding from external awards. NUGS does not represent compensation for work. It has no defined amount or hourly rate; they are paid periodically throughout the year. The university does not consider these payments employment income, and there are no source-specific tax deductions. For taxation purposes, a T4A will be provided.

Value: $5,000 or $10,000

Eligibility

must have an 80% average and be enrolled full-time in a graduate program.

Graduate Student Travel Funding

Nipissing University’s School of Graduate Studies provides financial support to eligible students who are actively presenting their research at an academic conference.

Eligibility

1. Students enrolled in their programs, at the Master’s or PhD level, and in good academic standing are eligible for this scholarship at the time of the conference.

2. Students must present at the conference with a paper or a poster. Funding is not available for students to attend conferences as delegates.

3. Throughout the academic year, each student will receive up to one award. They may apply in February after their applications were not approved in October. They can only get financial assistance once a year, though. Even if you plan to present at numerous conferences, you won’t receive more than one award.

Funding Cycles

Applications are due on October 15th and February 15th of each year for the two funding rounds available for the academic year. In October, the maximum payout of $2,500 will be made, and any unused funds from that month will be added to February’s grant, increasing it to $2,500). In February, a minimum grant of $2,500 will be given. If the applicant presented sufficient travel and conference attendance documentation and was enrolled as a student at the conference, they could submit their application retroactively. Please be aware that applying does not ensure financing; the applicant may not get any funding, let alone the entire sum. The most that can be asked for is $500.00.

Evaluation of Applications

The School of Graduate Studies Awards & Funding Committee evaluates applications. It assigns a score based on the following factors: The applicant’s distance traveled, the cost of the conference, money from other sources, evidence that they have looked for extra financing to pay their travel expenditures, and the importance of the conference presentation to them are all taken into consideration.
