The University of Wollongong offers PhD scholarships to domestic and international students. The PhD scholarships are designed to attract the best candidates to conduct research in various fields and provide financial support and opportunities for academic and professional development. Usually, UOW offers scholarships to students enrolled in PhD programs. They cover living stipends and may include tuition fee waivers for international students.

University Postgraduate Award (UPA)

A stipend to help with living expenses is provided by University Postgraduate Awards (UPAs).

Only University of Wollongong students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy are eligible for the UPA. The University of Wollongong has a set number of UPAs available, and they are awarded each year based on merit.

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship

Details of the scholarship
30% off the total cost of tuition for a course that satisfies the prerequisites.
Start date: 2025
Registration is necessary.

Coursework for a master’s degree at UOW (only available on Australian campuses) *Not including clinical exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics, clinical master’s degree in psychology, teaching, qualifying social work, or medical doctorate.

Requirements for citizenship

Type of application for an international student.
You don’t need to apply. This scholarship will be awarded to students automatically.
There are an infinite number of scholarships available.

Eligibility

1. In 2025, UOW will introduce a new Master’s program (only on campuses in Australia), with degrees in teaching, social work, psychology, nutrition and dietetics, exercise physiology, and medicine excluded.
2. Have a stellar academic record (75+ WAM or above).
3. Being an international student disqualifies one from receiving any additional financial aid, sponsorship, bursaries, or savings.
4. At every enrolment session, achieve a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 50.
5. Offers for the Master’s + Graduate Certificate package are not eligible for the prize.

Joint Postgraduate Scholarships Program

In some cases, overseas HDR students’ tuition costs may be covered by overseas Postgraduate Tuition Awards (IPTAs).
The following three circumstances may allow IPTAs to be made available:

• Full Course IPTA
• Financial Hardship IPTA
• Final Session IPTA

Full Course IPTA

Additionally, international students who earn stipend scholarships (equivalent to the current UPA stipend value) will be eligible for a Full Course IPTA, which will cover tuition up to 4.0 EFTSL for doctoral degrees and 2.0 EFTSL for master’s degrees.

Final Session IPTA

International students who want to finish their thesis during an IPTA final session can access it. Session IPTA is also available to final international students who are assessed to be investing extra hours in their studies and have an EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load). Students should show proof that they are almost finished with their thesis and discuss a final IPTA session with their supervisor. The supervisor has to apply to the Graduate Research School by the deadline for that specific session if they agree with the assertion.

Financial Hardship IPTA

International students can apply for this if they require an IPTA for a single session because of financial constraints. Students should consult with their supervisor and provide comprehensive details regarding the financial circumstances that prohibit them from paying fees in order to submit an IPTA for economic hardship. The supervisor has to apply to the Graduate Research School by the deadline for that specific session if they agree with the assertion.
