Friedrich Ebert Foundation: Scholarship for International Students

Description of the Program

Candidates hail from post-Soviet nations, Eastern and South-Eastern European (EU) nations, and the Global South (Asia, Africa, and Latin America). Students in any field may apply as long as they have a solid academic record, are currently enrolled in classes in Germany, and uphold and live by social democratic principles.

Sponsored students receive both material and non-material help to alleviate financial stress during their studies and free up more time for voluntary work.

Academic prerequisites

  1. Enrolment in a German state-run or state-approved university or college.
  2. International students can get funding for degree programs leading to the state test as well as bachelor’s, master’s, and diploma programs.

Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Scholarships 2025 (Fully Funded)

Students from other countries may apply for the fully funded Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Scholarships 2025–2026. Both master’s and doctoral degrees are eligible for these awards. The monthly income from these scholarships will be €1350. Additional 100 € lump sum payments are available to cover research expenses and other health care subsidies.

Scholarship Coverage

The recipient of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Scholarship enjoys the following advantages:

For Masters: A lump sum of 20€ is added to the monthly primary scholarship of 850€. Extra subsidies of up to 86€ are available for nursing and health insurance.

For PhD: The doctoral fellowship, worth 1350€ a month, is primarily unaffected by one’s salary. Additional 100€ lump sum payments are available to cover research expenses and other health care subsidies. Scholarship recipients can also receive funding for stays overseas (for research, attending conferences, etc.).

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Scholarship’s eligibility requirements

The candidate must meet each of the standards listed below in order to be eligible for the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Scholarship:

  1. Strong English language skills are required. Proficiency in German (B2 level or higher)
  2. All nations are eligible. We give preference to women, students from non-academic and immigrant backgrounds, those in need of social assistance, individuals with disabilities, and those who have demonstrated achievement and dedication. We strongly encourage applications from technical college graduates as well as undergraduate and graduate students in scientific and technical fields.
  3. Only applications in English or German will be accepted. Students must be enrolled in a state-owned or state-recognized German university.
  4. PhD candidates must be admitted to a university in Germany.
  5. Either a letter of admission from a German institution or a certificate of enrolment for the upcoming semester. By the time the scholarship begins, your enrolment must be recorded.

Heinrich boll foundation scholarships

About 1500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities who are enrolled in universities, applied science universities, or art universities each year are awarded scholarships by the Heinrich Boll Foundation.

In addition to having stellar academic records, we anticipate that our scholarship recipients will be politically and socially active and actively support the foundation’s core ideals of justice, democracy, human rights, and environment and sustainability.

International students and recent graduates who plan to pursue postgraduate or master’s degrees, doctoral studies, or a research stay of at least four semesters at a German university are the target audience for our Scholarship Program for International Students.

The guidelines

  • Own a university degree because we do not support bachelor’s degree programs.
  • Demonstrate above-average academic achievement.
  • Possess a strong command of the German language (B2-level).
  • Participate actively in volunteer activity.
  • Intend to attend a German university for at least four semesters, have a solid general education, and a keen interest in politics.
  • Have a favourable outlook on democracy and human rights, be willing to explore their own opinions, and demonstrate tolerance.
  •  Be highly driven, and be able to persuade us of their life’s objectives.

Our scholarship program offers access to the global KAS network, financial support, individual counselling, and a comprehensive seminar program. They also stay in touch with their alumni and include them in their national and international activities after they have completed their studies.

How to apply

They accept applications for their scholarship program in two ways:

  1. They choose new focal nations or regions for their selection processes every year. Interviews will be done online with a concentration on Latin America, Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey (all managed through our Peru office). If you reside in one of these nations, you can submit your written application straight to the relevant KAS office; please visit their websites to find out the precise process and recipient. Students from non-listed countries are not eligible to apply for the international selection process.
  2. If you currently reside or study in Germany, you are welcome to use their online application process to apply for a scholarship through the domestic selection program. Please upload all necessary application documents and complete the online application. Documents submitted by mail will not be taken into consideration, so please refrain from doing so. The domestic procedure’s application period closes every year on July 15th at noon/noon.

The KAAD Scholarships 2025–2026 fully funded in Germany are available for students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees at German universities.

Who is eligible to apply?

The KAAD Scholarship Program 1 is open to those who:

  1. Have a university degree and work experience in your home country and are from or currently residing in a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America.
  2. Want to pursue a Master’s degree, PhD, or other postgraduate studies, or are preparing to complete a post-doc or research stay (2–6 months for academics) at a German university?
  3. Belong to a Christian denomination, particularly for applicants from the near and Middle East or who are Catholic. Funding is available for applicants of other religions if Catholic partners suggest them and have a documented desire to participate in interreligious discussions.
  4. Possess proficiency in German before entering (KAAD can arrange for a maximum 6-month German language study in Germany).

What do we expect from you?

A commitment to religion and society or a readiness to participate in interreligious dialogue; an above-average performance potential for studies or research; and an orientation of studies or research towards a permanent reintegration into the respective home region (otherwise, the scholarship is considered a loan).

To participate in our mandatory educational program, students must have German language proficiency at least at level B1 (or at least A2 in the case of English-language degree programs). Preparatory German classes are anticipated in the home nation. Additionally, students have the option to apply for a full-time or study-related language course.

KAAD Eastern Europe Program

Who is eligible to apply?

Candidates must be Catholic (or, in rare circumstances, of another Christian faith, if suggested by Catholic partners) and from all Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern European, Central Asian, and Caucasian nations.

Who do we support?

  1. Bachelor’s degree postgraduates who want to enrol in a German institution to pursue a Master’s degree (maximum 24 months). In certain well-founded extraordinary circumstances, tuition costs for fee-based Master’s degree programs may be covered.
  2. Young scholars pursuing a doctoral degree in Germany (no more than 36 months)
  3. Young scholars who want to spend up to a year conducting research in Germany while pursuing a doctorate or habitation in their home country
  4. Postgraduate students who have finished their exams in their home country and are planning a research stay or a deeper understanding of the scientific knowledge already in existence in Germany or who are planning a non-consecutive postgraduate or supplemental course of study (this also applies to further training for licensed medical practitioners).
  5. Academics from universities who intend to spend up to six months in Germany for research.
  6. Students enrolled in master’s programs back home who intend to spend up to six months studying at a German university to gather information.
